SqueezeBox 3 First Impressions

We just received our shiny new Squeezebox the other day and wanted to share with you our first impressions. We have been extremely excited to get one of these guys in house for a long time now and when the box arrived we couldn't wait to tear it open and get at the goodies.
Upon opening it up we have to admit that we were surprised at the size of the unit. It is slightly bigger then we were expecting, not that its a bad thing, just its wider is all.
We decided on the all black version and once we got all the protective tape off we were blown away at how sexy this little guy is.
So we ran over to our media cabinet and started hooking this puppy up. We removed the optical cable that we were using for our airport express( bye bye iTunes ) and plugged it into the back of the Squeezebox. Then we just hooked up an Ethernet cable and then power. We decided to go for wired instead of wireless since we already had an Airport Express next to the media cabinet and we could just plug into the switch that was down there. No need to worry about setting up our wireless stuff again.
The screen is huge and very bright. Following the very clear on screen insturctions we started setting up the device for our network. The menus are simple, do you want to use DHCP yes or no, do you want to use wireless or wired, yes or no. So after about, oh i don't know like a minute of this the Squeezebox was setup and ready to be played.
We actually already had the Slimserver setup and running at our house because we have not only been pining for this for so long, but we have also been demoing the server, a great option in my opinion.
So we fired up the server and BAM, connection, no hassle. Using the shiny black remote we easily navigated the music browsing menus on the device. They are very similar in style to an iPod. Up, down, left and right are all you need to move around the menus. We picked the first song in our collection and hit play and then we heard it.. music, glorious music coming from our Squeezebox.
So our quick impression of the Squeezebox is that its the killer appliance for digital music for the home. Nothing about the setup of the player or the server requires you to be a tech master. Very simple setup and it basically just works out of the box.
So far, and its only been a day, we haven't found anything to complain about. The Squeezebox does what it claims to do and it does it very well. We love that they stuck to music and didn't try to cram other options into it. Like we said in our
earlier review they do one thing and they do it right.
This is a music player not just for audiophiles but for anyone that likes to listen to music over their stereo and likes to have access to all of their music in one place.
Now that Logitech has bought the company we will see what the future holds for Slimdevices and we will sure to keep you posted on any new products that are released.
Also, check back for our detailed in depth review of the Squeezebox where we really get under the hood and see what this puppy can really do.
Trust us, if you haven't decided on a networked music player, stop searching and get one of
these NOW!
We will be sure to have a full review once we have had some time to play with it and see if there are things that we don't like and things that we love that we didn't know were there so check back soon.
