IGH exec Bryson Koehler says the company is also testing RFID but feels that the smartphone technology, which can be used with iPhones, Blackberrys and Android phones among others, is more convenient.

Researchers Find Super Disc

dvd.jpg

A research team in Japan claim that they have a DVD that will hold 1000 times the amount of data as a Blu-ray disc, which holds 5 times the amount of data as an ordinary DVD. They have accomplished this by painting titanium oxide onto the disc that conducts electricity when put under light. There are no immediate plans to bring the discs to consumers but we expect it won't be long before the team finds an investor.

Galaxy 15 Runs Amok

galaxy.jpg

Intelsat seems to have an errant satellite on its hands. Galaxy 15, used for TV communications, decided to go its own way April 5 and now appears to be heading towards AMC 11, another satellite owned by SES World Skies. Galaxy is still receiving and transmitting signals but cannot be steered at this point, so it may be the source of interference once it reaches the same orbit as AMC next week. No specific cable TV providers are mentioned as using either of the satellites, but as both use the same frequency there may be something going on up there around May 23. Consider yourself warned.

So. Korea To Go HD This Month

3dtv.jpg

Beginning May 19, South Korea will be offering 3D TV stations KBS, MBC, SBS, and EBS. The first program will be the 2010 Colorful Daegu Pre-Championships Meeting on KBS, the precursor to the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Championships that will take place next year. While this makes South Korea the first country to do so, it certainly won't be the last. Still we have to wonder if there is enough 3D content out there to make it worth the expense.

Postscript: It would appear that Pulitzer Prize winning film critic Roger Ebert agrees with our semi anti-3D leanings, at least when it comes to large theaters. You can read his entire Newsweek essay "Why I Hate 3D" here.
