My Book Studio Drives Are Mac Friendly


Western Digital has released some new external drives for Apple fans. The The My Book Studio LX drives feature FireWire 800 and USB 2.0, and are Mac compatible. The drive is available in 1TB , 1.5TB and 2TB sizes.

Hitachi Adds SSD to Blu-ray Player


Hitachi's new Blu-ray player has included an integrated 32GB solid state drive. Dubbed Hy Drive, the plan seems to be that it will house the operating system and software, thereby saving space on your PC and allowing it to run better. The company plans on production in August so you may find one in that new laptop you plan to pick up this fall.

SP Armor USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive


Silicon Power has a new portable hard drive with a USB 3.0 interface that is also USB 2.0 backwards compatible. The Armor 80 HDD is rugged in terms of drop survivability and is water resistant. The 139 x 96 x 18mm drive's interface has a a 5 Gbps/sec bandwidth which is 10x the bandwidth of a USB 2.0 interface. Look for it in 640GB, 500GB, or 320GB models.

Samsung 20 NM Class NAND Chips


Samsung has proudly released 20 nanometer (nm) class NAND chips that can be used in SD cards and other devices with memory. They claim that they have a 50% higher productivity level than 30nm-class MLC NAND, and deliver a read speed of 20MB/s and write speed of 10MB/s. Memory cards with the technology will soon be available with 4GB - 64GB memory.

Seagate adds Netflix and YouTube Streaming


Seagate's FreeAgent Theater+, HD media player and Go External Drive has added a free firmware update that will allow it to stream Netflix, YouTube, vTuner and Mediafly. It also serves as a UPnP/DLNA device to play content stored on PCs and external drives.

Data Robotics Delivers Drobo File Server


Data Robotics has utilized its DroboShare chassis, added an Ethernet jack and a dual-core CPU, increased its RAM, made a few other changes and came up with a 4x faster Drobo File Server. Users can mix, match, swap and upgrade the storage unit with other Drobos with 5 bays to work with. An empty FS unit starts at a price of $699, while others can hold 4.5, 7.5 and 10TB.

Toshiba Releases Canvio Hard Drives


Toshiba has a new line of portable hard drives that can handle from 500GB to 1TB of data. The Canvios weigh about half a pound and come in black, silver, blue, red or green. Each plugs into your USB and can automatically and regularly back up files with NTI BackupNow EZ software. The largest drive, the 1TB model, can hold up to 285,000 digital photos, 263,000 digital music files, or 820 digital movies. Prices go from $119.99 to $199.99.

Eye-Fi Pro Memory Card Holds 8GB


Eye-Fi's Pro X2 Flash Memory Card is now available for pre-order. The WiFi enabled SD card can store and transfer photos and video from your camera to computer and an online social site with class 6 performance. Easy to install, the Pro X2 holds 8 GB memory and is compatible with most cameras as well as PC and Mac. Other cards from Eye-Fi are available now.
